Wool or polyester tufting yarn?

• Wool tufting yarn: for rugs that last. 100% New Zealand wool from farms certified to the Responsible Wool Standard (RWS). Spun at 837/3 tex, single or double strand. Its natural crimp springs back from feet and furniture, it is naturally flame-resistant and tightly spun for low shedding. 52 colours.
• Polyester tufting yarn: for bold colour. Ultra-Vivid yarn spun from Cationic Dyeable Polyester, which takes up dye more deeply than standard polyester. 990/3 tex, 3-ply, colourfast, and it won't attract moths or mildew. 60 colours, from neon brights to soft pastels.

Can't choose? Combine them. Polyester has a brighter, slightly glossier look and wool is more matte, so using both creates contrast between sections. Keep the pile height the same when you switch yarns.

How much tufting yarn do I need?

A rough guide for tufting double strand, in 500 g cones:

• 30 x 30 cm: about half a cone of wool or polyester
• 60 x 60 cm: 1.5–2 cones of wool, 2–2.5 cones of polyester
• 90 x 90 cm: 3–4 cones of wool, 4–5 cones of polyester
• 120 x 120 cm: 5–7 cones of wool, 6–8 cones of polyester

High pile (20–60 mm) uses roughly 2 to 3 times more yarn than low pile (7–18 mm). Loop pile uses slightly less than cut pile.

Choose your colours with a colour card

Screens shift colour, and saturated shades shift the most. Our colour cards hold a real yarn sample of every shade: the wool colour card with 52 shades and the polyester colour card with 60, so you can check tone and softness in your own light, ideally in daylight.

Which tufting guns does the yarn work with?

Both fibres are spun for standard cut pile and loop pile tufting machines, including our AK-V and AK-1N Duo. Wool runs cleanly in single or double strand. Polyester also tufts on a single strand.

What else do you need?

• A tufting gun for cut pile, loop pile or both.
• Tufting cloth to tuft into, stretched on a tufting frame.
• Latex carpet glue from your local hardware store. We don't sell glue.

What is the best yarn for tufting?

Wool if you want a rug that lasts and keeps its shape. Polyester if you want bold, saturated colour. Both are spun specifically for tufting.

Which yarn is best for beginners?

Ultra-Vivid polyester is consistent, forgiving and low-shed, so you can practise freely. Wool is just as easy to tuft and is the fibre for pieces you want to keep.

How much yarn is on a cone?

Every cone holds 500 g of yarn. A wool cone is about 600 m.

Can I mix wool and polyester in one rug?

Yes, many tufters do. Keep the pile height consistent and test the combination on a small area first.

Can I tuft with a single strand?

Yes. Both the wool and the polyester run single or double strand.

Yes. Our 100% New Zealand wool comes from farms certified to the Responsible Wool Standard (RWS), for animal welfare and responsible land management.

How do I clean a tufted rug?

Spot-clean only. Wool: cold water and a little mild detergent. Polyester: blot spills quickly, then lukewarm water and mild detergent. Let it air-dry and never machine wash a finished rug.
