Hippolyte Gobert’s Ocean-Inspired Tufting Art

This week, we’re diving into the creative world of Hippolyte Gobert, a 31-year-old tufting artist from France whose rugs ripple with natural forms and optical illusions. Though he only started tufting in March 2023, Hippolyte has already found a rhythm in the craft that blends artistic expression with tactile satisfaction.

From Instagram Curiosity to Full Creation

Like many artists in the tufting scene, Hippolyte’s spark came from scrolling through videos on Instagram. “I got into tufting after watching tufting videos online,” he says. But instead of just admiring the process, he picked up a tufting gun and got to work, quickly falling in love with the experience.

“My favorite thing is making an object from A to Z, especially when it’s my own design.”

Inspired by oceans

Hippolyte’s featured rug is a beautiful interplay of organic movement and bold geometry. On one hand, it draws from the natural flow of oceans, and on the other, it nods to the mind-bending patterns of Victor Vasarely, the father of Op Art.

The combination results in a piece that feels alive—moving, shifting, and drawing you in with subtle curves and flowing lines.

The Process

Creating the rug took about a month, with one recurring challenge: enough yarn. “I always underestimate how much yarn I need,” a relatable moment for anyone who’s ever tried to cover a frame. But with natural yarn, tufting fabric from Tufting Europe (an honor!) and his AK Duo tufting gun, Hippolyte powered through and brought his vision to life.
