Some rugs decorate a space. Others define it. This week’s piece does something more. It tells a story of transformation that feels both personal and quietly powerful.

In Milan, 32-year-old Fabio Passeri, founder of Rug Dope, is creating rugs as design objects with identity. Each piece is made to stand on its own, not just as decoration, but as something that shapes the atmosphere of a space.

From Routine to Direction

Fabio began tufting in 2022, at a moment when he felt the need to step away from a life that no longer reflected who he was. What started as a personal outlet gradually grew into something much more intentional.

By 2025, that shift became complete. Tufting turned into his full-time work.

With a strong interest in interior design, Fabio had always paid attention to the details that make a space feel considered. Tufting gave him the ability to create those details himself, shaping texture, color, and form exactly the way he imagined them.

What drives him today is the process of turning something that exists only in his mind into a one-of-a-kind physical piece. That mindset naturally led him to his most defining work so far.

Inspired by Myth and Personal Growth

The rug of the week is called “Tibetan Celestial Dragon.” It marks a turning point. Not just as a finished object, but as a moment of clarity.

“This piece made me realize clearly that this is my path,” he says.

The design draws from Asian symbolism, centered around the dragon, a figure Fabio has long felt connected to.

At the core of the concept is the legend of the carp that swims upstream and transforms into a dragon. It is a story about persistence, evolution, and becoming something greater through effort.

That idea mirrors his own journey. A gradual transformation shaped by both practical challenges and personal growth.

Anyone who creates knows that feeling. When something that once felt far away slowly becomes real.

A Month of Focus and Refinement

The rug took about one month to complete. The process was demanding, but giving up never really felt like an option.

For Fabio, challenges are part of the process, especially the internal ones.

During this project, he also refined an important part of his technique. After months of testing different approaches, this was the first time he fully applied a new method to finishing the back of the rug, adapting and improving it as he worked.

For this piece, Fabio used an AK-V tufting gun and acrylic yarn. At the same time, his process continues to evolve. Future projects will include wool and viscose, allowing him to explore more depth, texture, and visual richness.

For Fabio, a rug is not just a decorative object. It is a way to give identity to a space. Each piece is part of a larger vision. To create work that feels recognizable, personal, and not shaped by existing paths.

What started as a search for something more has become exactly that. A growing body of work where ideas take physical form and spaces gain character.

It is a reminder that the things we create often carry the story of how we got there, quietly woven into every detail.
