Tufting Yarn

Yarn shapes the look and feel of your rug more than anything else, and the main decision is the fibre. We carry two. Wool is the traditional choice: soft, hard-wearing, rich in colour. Polyester is the budget option for practice pieces and high-volume work. Explore each range below to compare colours and pick what fits your project.

Wool or polyester: which yarn to choose

Wool is the traditional tufting fibre. It is soft, springs back rather than crushing flat, and holds colour with depth, which is why most makers building a rug to keep choose it. Polyester is the newer, budget-friendly option. It costs less per cone and suits practice pieces, high-volume work, and tighter budgets. Both work on the same guns and cloth, so the choice is about the finish you want and what you are willing to spend, not about compatibility.

112 colours across two fibres

Between wool and polyester we stock 112 colours: 52 in wool and 60 in polyester. That is a wider range than you will find at most tufting suppliers, so whether you want the depth of wool or the value of polyester, you can match almost any design without compromising on shade.

Does the fibre change how a rug feels

Yes. Wool has a natural loft and warmth underfoot that synthetic fibre does not fully match, and it wears well over years. Polyester is lighter on the wallet and perfectly capable for learning, prototyping, or pieces where cost matters more than longevity. Many makers keep both: wool for finished work they are proud of, polyester for practising a design before committing.

How much yarn will I need

Plan your yarn by the area of your design and the pile height you want, since taller pile uses more. Explore each range below to compare colours and pick the fibre that fits your project.
